NEW YORK — Sony has officially announced a price increase for its popular PlayStation 5 gaming consoles in the United States, raising the cost by $50 across all available models. The company said the adjustment, which took effect on August 21, comes in response to global economic pressures that have been affecting major corporations worldwide.

In a blog post, Isabelle Tomatis, Sony’s Vice President of Global Marketing, explained that, like many other businesses, the company has been forced to make difficult choices as it navigates inflation, supply chain challenges, and the lingering effects of tariffs. She emphasized that while the decision was not made lightly, it was necessary to ensure the long-term stability of the brand and its hardware production.

The new pricing impacts the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, the Digital Edition, and the recently introduced PlayStation 5 Pro. Sony clarified that this increase will not extend to its lineup of games or accessories, meaning only console prices are affected by this adjustment.

Earlier this month, Sony reported its latest earnings from Tokyo, where executives revealed ongoing efforts to expand and diversify the company’s supply chain to reduce dependency on specific regions and soften the blow of U.S. tariffs on electronics imports.

This move places Sony in line with its competitors, as Microsoft raised Xbox console prices back in March, while Nintendo made similar adjustments for both the original Switch and accessories tied to its upcoming Switch 2 system. Industry analysts suggest that rising costs across the sector may continue, as manufacturers struggle to balance affordability for consumers with the realities of higher production and distribution expenses.
