Olympic freestyle skiing champion Eileen Gu has suffered an injury during training in New Zealand, marking another setback for the 21-year-old after recently recovering from a shoulder issue. The American-born Chinese skier was hurt on August 15 while training at Cardrona Skifield and was flown to Christchurch the next day for medical scans.

Gu shared on Weibo, where she has 6.7 million followers, that the accident was “man-made” but did not disclose details of her condition. “I hope I can return to the snow soon, but I’m still waiting for final confirmation from the expert team,” she wrote. Gu has not updated her status since August 16.

The San Francisco-born athlete, who switched allegiance to China ahead of the 2022 Beijing Games, won two gold medals at just 18 and is expected to compete for China again at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina.

Her post hinted that an over-eager fan may have contributed to the accident. “I have to concentrate fully during training, especially when I’m about to start, as it’s dangerous to be interrupted,” she said, urging fans not to film or take photos while she trains.

Gu, ranked the world’s second-highest earning female athlete in 2023 with $22.1 million according to Forbes, has yet to reveal when she might return to competition.
