Ghanaian artist Shatta Wale questioned in U.S. luxury car investigation

Ghanaian singer Shatta Wale was taken into custody on Wednesday in connection with a U.S.-based fraud investigation involving a luxury vehicle, authorities confirmed on Thursday. The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) of Ghana said Wale voluntarily appeared for questioning following a request from U.S. authorities seeking information about the origins of his 2019 Lamborghini Urus. He was subsequently released on bail.

EOCO stated that the inquiry forms part of a broader probe into a $4 million crime in the United States, involving multiple Ghanaians and the recovery of the illicit funds. Central to the investigation is Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian national who, in 2023, was sentenced to seven years in a U.S. federal prison for orchestrating a scheme that defrauded the city of Lexington, Kentucky. Amuah and his associates allegedly posed as nonprofit organizations and convinced city officials to wire money into shell companies, siphoning millions in the process.

Authorities in the U.S. suspect that Wale’s Lamborghini Urus may have been purchased using the proceeds from that Kentucky-based fraud, according to EOCO. Wale has maintained that he is unable to identify the individual from whom he purchased the car.

Wale’s legal team emphasized that they are “fully engaged and actively working with the authorities to resolve this matter.” As one of Ghana’s most prominent and influential artists, Wale has achieved international recognition, particularly after his feature on Beyoncé’s 2019 hit, “Already.” The case underscores the intersection of celebrity, international crime investigations, and luxury assets, drawing widespread attention both in Ghana and abroad.
