KILIFI, Kenya — Authorities in coastal Kenya have unearthed another grim discovery, exhuming five bodies from shallow graves in Kilifi County, close to the infamous site where over 400 victims of a doomsday cult were uncovered two years ago.

Government pathologist Dr. Richard Njoroge confirmed that, in addition to the bodies, investigators recovered 10 human body parts scattered in nearby thickets around Kwa Binzaro, just two kilometers from Shakahola, the epicenter of the 2023 tragedy. He added that the exhumation process would continue, with teams expected to return to the site on Friday.

The ongoing operation, carried out by homicide detectives, forensic experts, and pathologists, also revealed 27 suspected mass graves, intensifying fears that the area may conceal many more victims. Investigations are now focused on determining the identities of the deceased and the precise causes of death.

The gruesome scene echoes the Shakahola massacre, where more than 400 bodies were previously exhumed. At the time, self-proclaimed pastor Paul Mackenzie had allegedly ordered his followers to fast until death as a means of “meeting Jesus.” Mackenzie remains in custody facing murder charges as his trial awaits commencement.

So far, eleven individuals suspected to be former followers of Mackenzie have been arrested in connection with the new discovery. They are currently under investigation but have not been formally charged.

The case has once again cast a spotlight on dangerous cult activity in Kenya. Authorities have previously scrutinized certain religious organizations, including some high-profile churches, accused of exploiting followers through practices such as discouraging education and medical treatment in the name of faith.
